Since 1982, the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force, based in Geilenkirchen, Germany, has provided air surveillance for NATO allies, ensuring the integrity and security of NATO airspace. Over the past four decades, NATO E-3A AWACS have been deployed on a variety of missions in support of counter-terrorism, evacuation and humanitarian aid. The E-3A component occupies a unique place in NATO's history as the first multinational flying unit established by the Alliance and involving 20 NATO member nations. The blue stripe running down both sides of the fuselage features silhouettes of aircraft operated by NATO member nations over the decades - from the Saab Draken and the massive C-5 Galaxy to today's F-35 stealth fighter.
